2-1-1 Long Island Database, available at www.211longisland.org, provides detailed information on 10,000+ resources related to health and human services. 2-1-1 LI Database is managed by MCPL and supported by Suffolk County government, United Way of Long Island, and MCL Foundation.

Allstate Readiness Series, sponsored by the Allstate Foundation and focused on TAF’s message, “Good Starts Young, giving youth the tools and resources to be the next generation of leaders to make a difference in the world. For more information visit www.readinessbeginswithme.org.

Distinguished Speakers Series, presented by the Middle Country Library Foundation, provides three seminars annually to educate and inform practitioners working with young children and families on Long Island. E-Reference is an e-mail service for information, research, reserves and interlibrary loan – send a message to eref@mcpl.lib.ny.us and a librarian will respond within 24 hours on weekdays, longer on weekends.

Family Place Libraries is a project for which MCPL is the national trainer and model for libraries nationwide to help develop family-centered programs, services and spaces by expanding the traditional role of libraries and transforming them into community centers for literacy, early childhood education, parent support and community information. Family Place is supported nationally and regionally by the Hagedorn Endowment for Family Place Libraries, the Rauch Foundation, the Sandy River Charitable Foundation, Middle Country Library Foundation, NY Community Bank Foundation, Pamela & Richard Rubenstein Foundation, and the William E. and Maude S. Family Center, a partnership between the library and the Family Service League of Suffolk, Inc., operates in Selden and Centereach, providing family support through individual consultation and referrals to health and human services to meet individual family needs. Staffed by a social worker, the services are free and confidential and open to families residing in Brookhaven. Supported in part by a NYS Member Grant from NYS Assemblyman Steven Englebright. Moms’ Group, part of the National Association of Mothers’ Centers, meets weekly to discuss the needs of moms and the ever changing challenges and joys of parenting. Children welcome. Free play. Phone 631-585-9393 ext. 220.

 

ParentChild+, a free school readiness and family support service, provides home visits to families with children 18-36 months of age with limited access to educational opportunities. The premise of PCHP is that children learn best through play and that learning can be fun. Resources are provided to qualifying families. Phone 631-585-9393 ext. 225.

 

Kids in Care, an outreach program, designed for family childcare providers residing in the MCCSD and the young children in their care. A trained children’s librarian will visit the home with kits of age-appropriate books, music and toys for the children in care. Phone 631-585-9393 ext. 240.

Live-brary.com, a cooperative project of Suffolk County libraries, offers bestselling fiction, nonfiction, children’s books, music, movies and how-to videos. Browse hundreds of titles to play on your computer, transfer or download to a portable devise, or burn to CD, is available 24/7 from the comfort of your home or elsewhere by using your library card. The Literacy Office is open to assist patrons with limited literacy or English proficiency needing help accessing library services and programs. Assistance is available various hours in Centereach. Call 631-585-9393 ext. 267.

Mailbox Library serves homebound patrons who are unable to visit the library, have a valid library card and a signed application by a physician, nurse or social worker. For information and eligibility call 631-585-9393 ext. 558.

Miller Business Resource Center, located in the Centereach building, is a regional resource for business, independent entrepreneurs, not-for-profit organizations and individuals offering access to extensive and specialized resources and personalized research, reference, and career counseling services. The Center receives support from John D. Miller, Bank of America, JPMorgan Chase, the Middle Country Library Foundation, NYS Senator John J. Flanagan, Citibank, the Town of Brookhaven Local Development Corporation, TD Bank, as well as sponsorship revenue from the Women’s EXPO and Strictly Business. Phone 631-585-9393 ext 133.

 

Career Counseling Services are provided by counselors, available to district residents 14 and up for employment, occupational and college counseling. Call 631-585-9393 ext. 133 for a confidential appointment.

 

Miller Business Mornings, a networking group providing a forum for local business people to meet regularly, exchange information, share resources, and participate in educational presentations, convenes five Fridays per year @ 8:00am in Centereach. Phone 631-585-9393 ext. 296.

The Museum Corner is a specially designed interactive exhibit space in the Children’s Department at the Centereach building featuring changing hands-on exhibits and programs for children and their families. Vast opportunities for creative expression and intellectual exploration are provided – props for dress-up, science experiments, historic artifacts and art activities. Families and school and community groups are invited to explore experience, share and create in a safe, fun environment.

The Museum Pass Program allows library patrons free admission to nearby museums. Library card holders in good standing, 19 and over, may reserve a pass for a non-renewable two-day periods, to be returned to the Centereach building prior to closing on the third day. The Nature Explorium is an outdoor learning space designed to connect children and their families to the natural world, to encourage discovery and exploration through reflection, physical, artistic and expressive activities, and to provide a unique avenue connecting literacy, learning and an appreciation for nature as part of the library experience. Online Homework Help connects students K-12, beginning college and adult learners with tutors in Math, Science, English and Social Studies who are available daily from 2-11pm in English and Español. Senior Connections, a confidential library-based support service for older adults, provides information and referrals linking patrons and their families to health and social services. It is available on the third Thursday each month from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m., Centereach and every Friday from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m., Selden. Suffolk Coalition for Parents and Children is a countywide organization including mental health and social service professionals, librarians, educators, public and community based agencies, professionals serving youth, parents and citizens interested in sharing information, ideas and resources; planning programs and services cooperatively; advocating for children and parents; educating about related topics; and demonstrating how coalitions create more effective professionals and family support agents.
